OE Quality Oil Seals

As the aftermarket distribution arm of the Freudenberg Group, Corteco draws on many decades of manufacturing expertise to offer the widest range of oil seals and seal kits for engine, transmission and driveline, and wheel hub. This includes crank and cam shaft seals as well as valve stem and transmission seals.

When You Buy Corteco Oil Seals, You Buy OE

Our parent company, Freudenberg, is the largest global manufacturer of oil seals and designed and manufactured the first Simmerring® — the technology of choice among OEMs — in 1929. The Corteco sealing range is derived from more than 7,000 gaskets and over 6,500 different shaft seals, Simmering®, and valve stem seals that are available in OEM quality today.

Corteco also supplies the independent aftermarket with TransTec® brand automatic transmission, power steering, electronic power steering, and heavy duty sealing kits of the highest quality. The components of each kit have the same design and material characteristics as the original equipment. In addition to providing the widest vehicle and application coverage, every kit is guaranteed to provide all the necessary components for a complete rebuild.

Copy Oil Seal

Only an oil seal specialist has the right knowledge to develop an efficient and high-performance part. Copied oil seals run the risk of oil leakage, potentially damaging engine components and increasing vehicle repair costs. Characteristics of copied oil seals include:

  • Spiral helix is less defined
  • Inexpensive rubber compounds substitute original compounds
  • Insufficient dynamic sealing contact
  • Generic, universal lip designs replace the complex original designs

The identification of a copied seal is almost impossible without a microscope, so trust the experts in sealing — Corteco and Freudenberg-NOK.

How to Identify an Original Corteco Seal

The markings below all represent oil seals manufactured by the Freudenberg-NOK partnership. These markings all signify the design and manufacturing expertise of Corteco/Freudenberg-NOK. When you see any of these markings, you can rest assured that you have a quality product that meets the precise design specifications and ensures precise functionality.

The Corteco Difference

The technical superiority of Corteco oil seals is one of the reasons why they are the aftermarket choice worldwide. Flip through the slides to see what sets Corteco apart.

Low Cost Parts = Expensive Repair Jobs

Seals represent some of the lowest cost parts in the most expensive repair jobs — but choosing the wrong seal can lead to warranty claims and more expensive repairs.

Critical Components of Oil Seals

  • Correct Size
  • Geometry and material compound meets original equipment specifications

Even though an oil seal may fit properly, significant geometrical differences in the casing, lip design, helix, or material differences could lead to leaking, premature wear in both the seal and mating components, and even failure.

Sealing Lip and Case Design Differences

The images to the right represent only a small fraction of the number of possible oil seal geometry types designed for various automotive applications.

Selecting an aftermarket seal that matches the design of the original equipment is imperative in ensuring proper function and preventing unwanted leaks, or early failures.

Oil Seal Evolution

Today’s ever-increasing quality and efficiency demands are driving innovation leaders like Freudenberg-NOK to produce seals that offer both better sealing and lubrication as well as reduced friction for fuel efficiency. Freudenberg’s patented E.S.S.® (Energy Saving Seal) and PTFE POP® seals are the first step of Freudenberg project called “LESS”, for CO2 emissions reduction and performance increasing in modern vehicles. Their specific technology has been developed to be in line with today’s markets requirements: reliability, duration, resistance to bio-fuel, CO2 emissions reduction and performance increase.

Helix Design and Direction

The molded helix found on the shaft side of the sealing lip provides an oil sling effect that directs oil inward both preventing leaks and keeping proper lubrication where needed. The design, mold quality and orientation of the helix are all important factors that promote proper seal function.

Why Seal Design Matters

Every automotive oil seal is designed by an OEM (like Freudenberg-NOK) to meet specific requirements provided from the OE. Each application requires unique functionality in order to achieve the desired performance.

Take Valve Stem Seals (for example). Valve stem seals have unique functionalities such as oil retention, purpose controlled leaking for lubrication and prevention of exhaust gas blowback that are highly dependent on the specific engine parameters for which the seal is designed for use. Using a valve stem seal that meets those exact design criterion is absolutely critical for proper engine function and seal longevity.
